On a Completey Unrelated Note...

It seems the comment spammers have quieted down.

I think my solution to getting rid of the spam was somewhat clever, although the only reason it worked was because I don't get 40 comments per blog post and because my "readership" (heh, that's almost funny using that word) is small enough for me to allow me to manually keep track of what comments do and don't get posted.

I'm still sorta sad that this "antibush" person that lobbed a flameball and then left never came back to reply to my reply.

Oh well. Apparently I have enough to be stressed about. Heh.

Wow. And I already feel much better after having gotten that last post off my chest. See, I knew this silly blog would be good for something! I still don't know that I'm going to be able to get back to sleep. C'est la vie.

If only I knew how to say that in portuguese. My daughter and one of her little friends are teaching themselves portuguese because they think they are going to travel to Brazil when they are older. She's a piece of work. Every day she comes home with a new set of phrases that she and Mady have learned. Yesterday it was "where is the bathroom?" I guess if you're in a foreign country that's not necessarily a bad thing to be able to ask....

Stressed

But I'm not sure why.... I was a total grouch yesterday, for completely unknown reasons. Now I'm awake at 4:30 in the morning, and feel quite stressed, but again I don't have a good explanation of why. I'm not having problems at work or at school or at home. What's the problem?

The only thing I've been remotely concerned about lately is this hubbub with Chief Illiniwek, but that can't possibly be what is keeping me from enjoying a good night's sleep.

Am I sad to to see the Chief go? Yes. Will life go on? It most certainly will. Do I think the politcally-correct self-righteous do-gooders are jerks? Of course I do. Now they want to get rid of the term "Illini" as well, which even the NCAA agrees has nothing to do with the Chief (and predates him by many years).

What next? Rename the state? What about Indiana? INDIANa. Ohio is named after an Indian (sorry, "Native American") word. How about we get rid of the fat kid and the tuba "dotting the i"?? Michigan? Indian word. Wisconsin? Indian word. Minnesota, the Dakotas, Missouri, Iowa? They'll all have to be renamed.

Maybe this is why I'm upset. How scary that such a small, albeit quite vocal, minority can have carte blanche to control what's "right" and what's "wrong." Where does our world go next? Maybe two percent of the population will next decide that green lights should mean "stop" and red lights should mean "go." Nevermind that we're all used to it the way that it is now. Or even better--all red lights need to be changed to some non-hostile color like mauve. Who cares that it will waste tons of taxpayer money and confuse everyone for years to come.

There's a reason why the metric system never caught on in the U.S.--because we already know our feet and pounds and don't have any desire to learn something new just because someone says it will be good for us.

Gosh. Maybe I am a little bit upset by all of this. You know, when Prince Albert gets 49% of the vote, and Dubya gets 49% of the vote, and it comes down to counting manually punched cards and what has a "hanging chad" and what doesn't, yeah, I'll give people being irritated about how that turned out. Quite frankly, half of the country would be justifiably mad about that either way. Heck, I'll even go so far to say that in hindsight I kinda wish the person I voted for hadn't won. Anyway... This latest scenario has Bush winning with only 5% of the vote. Okay, maybe that's not fair. But from every poll I've seen, and everything I've read, scientific or not, it's at least two to one in favor of the Chief. At LEAST.

That's not 51% vs. 49%.

I guess I'm irked because that minority labels me as a racist. And that's hardly fair. They've never met me. They don't know what I think.

They just label. That's what they do.

And they are "right" because, well, they say so. And I'm an idiot for not agreeing with them.

I don't like being called an idiot. Or a racist.

And I still didn't realize I was so upset about this.

Am I said to see the Chief go? Of course I am. As an alumnus and employee and huge advocate for the wonderful institution that is the University of Illinois, am I happy that this whole thing is behind us? Quite frankly? Yes I am. This has been coming for almost 20 years. And if the symbol is truly offensive, then it should be retired.

But the vocal minority has won a victory. And the murmurings now are that they don't want to stop with just getting rid of the Chief. And that scares me. What are we going to lose next? What's the next battle we're going to have to wage for the next 18 years? This one has been exhausting. No more band because that's "offensive?" Tear down all the buildings on the quad because they were built without the help of enough minority workers way back when?

Yes, I'm rambling. It's too early in the morning to be thinking coherently.

I guess I know why I'm mad now, at least.

Oskee wow wow.

Melting Snow

Well I managed to actually get my annual report done at work today, and only 8 days late. That's a huge weight off the shoulders.

I was busy last year, but I think I'm going to be twice as busy this year. It's probably a good thing I quit the freelancing when I did.

But fortunately for me, while my plate is over full right now, I'm hungry to do the work, and all of it looks like it will taste good. Theoretically I could ask to have things removed from my plate, but I don't think I'm going to. The control freak in me wants to do each of the things that need to be done. That way they'll be done correctly and I won't have to worry about them later.

Alex and I just got back from a basketball game against Heritage in Homer. We won! 15-4! And even though he missed a week because of strep throat (and then we missed a few games because of all the snow) the coach played him a bunch and he did very, very well. I was talking to his best friend's mom about how I'm so not a "sports parent." I don't get irritated when my kid isn't in the game--I get scared to death when he is. I was never the sports type, and I was the kid that never had the ball hit to me in little league but every time it was I dropped it. And that made it even harder the next time because I was so petrified that I'd drop it again. I wished nobody would hit the ball toward me. Okay, enough whining. But so when Alex gets put in the game I just get nervous. And he's so much the opposite of me--he doesn't get worked up about jack squat. He had a couple of good rebounds, and he actually shot the ball a couple of times (he missed, but at least he shot the ball). The coaches put him in at one point to box out a kid on the other team and on the very next play Alex did exactly what he was supposed to and got a couple good pats on the back. My good boy.

And my geerow (I can't brag on the boy's basketball skills without giving a "shout out" to my daughter) is up at the school this evening with her little friends at some sort of math fair or something (I never did get the full story about this). Apparently they are going to teach people chess. And I think I'm a nerd? The difference is that when she does it, she's not nerdy about it. She can pull off being cool and doing nerdy stuff. Or something.

Anyway.

All the feets of snow have been melting steadily for the past two days as daytime temperatures have been in the upper 30s and low 40s. So now we evolve into late-Winter dreary soggy blah.

Come on vernal equinox! (Hey, it's only a month or so away--I should revive my little counter thingy....)

Well the rest of the week should be better now that my report is out of the way. I do have to write up a two page list/explanation of what I've accomplished (in general) over the past four years because my wonderful bosses are nominating me for a departmental award. How cool is that?

Okay, the redhead is off the phone so I am going to go hang out with her....

Too Busy

What has happened to my life?

Gosh, that sounds a lot more dire than I intended.

But I feel so busy, busy, busy. I don't update my blog anymore. I am having a hell of a time with school. I'm swamped at work.

Heh. History of Star Wars on the History Channel.

Once again, my blog will have to suffer. I'd much rather watch this than bitch about how hard school and work are right now.

Maybe I'll update later....

Snow Day

Hey, my web site has returned....

Winter is finally here. For the past couple of days they've been talking about 8-12 inches of snow for our area, and of course my response is "yeah, right." Just like all of the golfball-sized hail that they are always talking about in the Spring. I'm 37 and have lived in the midwest my entire life and I have never seen hail any bigger than a pea. Ever.

And when they said 8-12 inches, I figured 2-3, because that's usually how the math turns out.

It's been snowing for probably close to 24 hours and we're well past 12 inches of accumulation.

And it's supposed to keep snowing for another 8 hours (and it is snowing harder right now than it has all day...). They actually shut down the University today. That's a lot of snow....

Since I'm sure everyone out there is just dying for an update on my headache situation, I'll offer one and try to keep it brief. Blood tests: everything fine. Urine tests: everything fine. MRI: everything normal, except that they think I might have a slight sinus problem.

I told them I thought it was my sinuses three frickin' months ago and my doctor said he didn't think that was it... So three months and $6,000 worth of test later...

I'm off the epilepsy medicine, finally. And no more of the stuff that was giving me the rash. The rash is gone and I'm back to normal. He gave me some samples of Prevacid and told me I could take two Aleve twice a day and take one Prevacid every time I do that. And that seemed to work. So I'm now just waiting for this blizzard to go away so I can pick up the prescription.

Surprisingly, my head has been okay the past few days even without the Aleve and such.

Oh, he also gave me a thing of Nasonex for my sinuses (maybe that's why my head has been okay). And I had a bit of an epiphany. My daughter was put on Nasonex a few months back. My son started using it a month or so later. And now I'm using it as well. Heh, I thought, our doctor must have a deal with the pharmaceutical rep to really push the Nasonex.

Obviously, that's not the case.

Then it occurred to me. All three of us are having to take this Nasonex stuff. Surely there's a connection.

Well, when my in laws still lived here my father used to put old carpet down in the crawl space so that when you crawl around your knees don't hurt from being on the rocks and such.

The last time I was in the crawl space my knees got wet.

I think we have a mold/mildew problem, both in the carpet in the crawlspace and with the basement carpeting in general.

This Spring I'm getting a dumpster dropped on the driveway and all of that carpet is outta here. And I bet that solves a LOT of problems.

So the headache situation is taken care of for now. I'm looking forward to reporting back to my doctor and telling him my theory on the mildew and stuff. I think we'll get this wrapped up yet. And believe me, I can't wait.

I don't have much else to blab about.

I have a feeling that tomorrow is going to be a snow day as well....

And that's perfectly fine with me.
