Sleep Test Finished!

Tuesday night we had chicken stir fry, which was very, very tasty (I made mine with hot peppers and it was awesome). I mixed it up for breakfast yesterday and had a banana instead of an apple. An okay substitute, I guess.

It was payday and the redhead got a (small) raise so we celebrated by going to Guido's in downtown Champaign for lunch. I fully intended to get something relatively healthy but as soon as the server said that one of the specials was a prime rib philly steak sandwich I knew I was in trouble. It was *awesome*. I had onion rings too. And a Pepsi. I've been good for a couple of weeks--one bad lunch won't kill me.

Last night we were going to have hamburgers for dinner as a compromise to not going to a burger place for lunch--which was one of the choices that the redhead and I were deciding on yesterday morning. Well as it turns out we had no hamburger buns. So I made patty melts of sorts on white bread. Essentially I made grilled cheese sandwiches with a burger patty in the middle.

Except I only had three burgers. So I had the last hot and spicy italian sausage with hot red peppers and onions. All in all, not a very good diet day for me.

Em and I had an eye appointment yesterday afternoon, and fortunately Dr. Glancy wasn't too irritated that it had been five years since I had last had a check up, nor that I had purchased 8 boxes of contacts then and that was supposed to be a year's worth and I made them last five years (just being fiscally responsible, right?). Well Em got new contacts and I have a new pair in that are "new technology" and really, they are totally different and much, much more comfortable than the old ones (which at the time I thought were perfect).

I went to the sleep test thing last night. It wasn't terrible. I don't think I got more than four hours of sleep. I had probably two-dozen (?) wires attached to my scalp, torso, legs, forehead, etc., along with an air tube in my nose to measure breathing and an oxygen sensor taped to my finger. It was pretty funny. If you ever saw and remember "The Running Man" with Ahhh-nold, imagine that I looked somewhat like the Dynamo character.

Anyway, I slept a few hours, and was up at 4:30 this morning. Well, I was awake sooner than that, that was just the end of the requisite six hours that they had to take data for.

They make it clear that the technicians aren't supposed to give a diagnosis and that patients won't find anything out until they see the actual doctor several weeks later, but one of the first things the technician said to me this morning was "yeah, I don't know that you'll be coming back to try out the CPAP machine." She was quick to add that the doctor will decide that, etc., etc. but she slipped, and I was listening on all ports, and I caught it.

She didn't say that she thought I didn't need to, just that she was expecting that I wouldn't be back. Not a diagnosis, per se, just a hunch on her part that they wouldn't be seeing me again. And I bet her hunches are pretty good... Sweet!

So I am taking the day off today so I can actually get some sleep (although I'm wide awake right now...). I may clean the house and clean out some drawers and maybe rake some leaves.

Oh Linus, quit whining. Okay, I should wrap this up...

Sick of Apples

Another morning, another apple. Sigh. Maybe I'll see about some grapes or bananas or something from the store tonight.

I'm still doing okay on my diet. Not perfect, but every time I eat something that isn't terrible for me and substitute it with anything that is even slightly better for me, it's a small victory, right?

Friday was bad because my mother-in-law brought over a couple of leftover carryout pizzas. Don't get me wrong, they were awesome, but sausage and pepperoni probably aren't the best thing I could be eating. I had a couple of pieces for breakfast the next morning as well (oops). I made myself a chicken sandwich for lunch Saturday and broke down and made a hamburger for dinner.

Saturday night we went to Mattoon to see Em and her fellow junior high cheerleaders do a dance at halftime of the Lake Land College vs. Parkland College basketball game. It was fun, and the girls did a great job.

Sunday morning I was up at 4:00 a.m. (except it was 3:00 because of the Daylight Saving switch). Of course I had my apple then because I was hungry. I went back to bed and when I got up again at a more normal hour I decided that I was in no mood for another apple so I cooked a package of sausage links and had a couple of eggs and some freshly-shredded hash browns. It was quite tasty, and much better than an apple.

I had another chicken sandwich for lunch. Yes, I put mayonnaise on the bun, but again, it wasn't a double cheeseburger.

The best thing I did for my blood pressure on Sunday was that I didn't watch a single minute of the Bears game. They won, but I'm sure I would not have enjoyed the game. I watched the Dolphins and Ravens game instead. And yeah, I had a few beers... Sunday night I cooked a slab of ribs and a few chicken thighs in the oven. I had a single rib and one chicken thigh, so not too terrible.

Yesterday morning I was back on the apple breakfast diet thing. The redhead and I went to lunch with our friend Alex from "her work" and went to Bamba. Yeah, I had another monster steak and chorizo burrito. It was so tasty...

Last night Em had to cheer at a basketball game so we sort of did fend-for-yourself for dinner (we tend to do that frequently, and even more so once basketball and cheerleading seasons are in full swing). Betsy cooked up a couple of chicken breasts for us and we each made a chicken quesadilla. I broke down and bought hot peppers from the grocery store since the first frost has come and gone and wiped out the last of my paltry fresh supply. The salsa I made was quite spicy and the quesadilla was really good.

Another apple for breakfast today (sigh). We brought our lunches today--I made a salad with cucumbers and carrots and lettuce and a roast beef and turkey on white bread sandwich.

Sleep test tomorrow night. Ugh.

Sleep Test (for Real This Time)

So the whole point of the title of my last post was that I have been scheduled to have a sleep test done because I may or may not have sleep apnea, which may or may not contribute to my high blood pressure.

Next week I have to spend the night at the sleep center in Champaign with a whole slew of equipment hooked up to me to see how screwed up I am when I sleep. I can't see that I'll get much sleep at all, especially since I doubt they'll let me have a couple of glasses of red wine before I'm forced to retire.

So we'll see what happens. I think this is a somewhat futile exercise because no matter what they determine I can't see that I'm going to spend the money for a CPAP machine, nor use it even if I did buy one.

So anyway.

Tuesday night we had tacos for dinner, but in addition to beef I also made chicken for me (and my daughter as well).

Wednesday morning I had another apple for breakfast. We ate out again (I know, I know) and went to Mas Amigos. I had a fajita burrito, which chicken instead of beef. And it had vegetables, so I'm still doing somewhat okay.

Last night for dinner we sort of fended for ourselves. I had cooked two chicken breasts yesterday morning to bring for lunch to cut up and put on a salad so I made a chicken ultimate with those (sans bacon, of course). And we were out of swiss cheese so I used the last two pieces of muenster that we had. It was okay, I guess. I used the rest of the pizza crust to make a pepperoni pizza for Alex. I had a piece--it wasn't very good. (Probably from being cooked on the cookie sheet that I made my ultimate on...).

This morning I had another apple for breakfast.

For lunch, alas, Tod and I went to Bamba. And I could have gotten a regular chicken burrito but I really don't like Bamba's chicken much, and well, I've been good for a week--I can have *one* lunch that is truly bad for me. So I did. Super steak and chorizo with sour cream, cheese, and no beans. Mmm. I even had a Mountain Dew--the first caffeine I've had in over a week.

I think tonight we're going to have grilled cheese sandwiches and various soups. I may end up making another chicken breast for myself or something.

The redhead and I are off tomorrow as the kids don't have school and it is Em's birthday. Hard to believe that she's going to be 14. Time goes too fast.

I'll probably take my blood pressure at CVS on the way home tonight and post it on Twitter. Hopefully the caffeine from lunch is out of my system by then. They doubled up my blood pressure medicine and it really feels like it has been working, so hopefully the machine at CVS will agree.

Sleep Test

Had an apple for breakfast again today, and another one late in the morning because we had to take a late lunch.

For lunch we ate at Empire China on campus. Still maybe not very good for me, but I got chicken instead of beef in my szechuan stir fry. Quite tasty.

Not sure about dinner tonight but I'm sure it will be something chicken-related.

Looking forward to having a couple of beers and watching the election results!

Apple Monday

I still woke this morning at 4:00 a.m. but resisted the slight urge to eat anything.

When I did get up I threw a couple of tiny boneless, skinless chicken breasts into the oven for lunch.

I had my fantastic green apple on the way to work, and it was tasty.

For lunch I had a salad with cut up chicken (see above) as well as a small cup of the redhead's chicken noodle soup from yesterday or the day before. All quite tasty.

Tonight we didn't really have dinner as we went to see Em dance between the 7th and 8th grade games (we didn't care about the basketball, no offense, but just went to see the dance in between games). We mis-guessed at when we should have gotten there so we watched the last half of the 7th grade game before being able to watch the dance routine. Interesting how much less stressful junior high basketball is when your kid isn't playing.

Right now I'm having a quesadilla with fresh salsa (yikes--pulled the last of the peppers off the plants which died of frost the other night--this is some hot stuff!). Still no steak-based food for me. Holy smokes this salsa is hot...

Work has been great lately. Looking forward to the upcoming months. Busy, busy, busy, which is *fantastic*.

I registered for my last grad school class today and will theoretically finish up in May.

Piano lessons here I come!
